What is Fasting?
What is Fasting?
Fasting is simply cutting something from your life to focus on the spiritual. Due to the busyness of our culture, we often find ourselves almost closed off from hearing from God. Some contributors are things like stress, work, kids, constant stimulation through tv and social media, and such. A fast is a dedicated period of time to focus on God.
How long should I fast for?
How long should I fast for?
Ultimately, this is up to you, but as a church body, we are fast for 21 days straight. If you accidently slip up on your fast, just jump in and try your best to continue the fast until the end of the fasting period.
There are a 4 different type of fasts you can participate in depending on your health and needs. 1) A complete food fast (make sure to consult a doctor and plan it out before attempting). 2) Selective fast, where you abstain from certain food groups. 3) Partial fast, where you may fast certain times of the day or meals. 4) Soul fast, where you cut out and reduce certain non-food elements of your life, such as video games, tv, social media, etc. To see more about the type of fasts, click the icon above.
What else should I do on a fast?
What else should I do on a fast?
The main purpose behind 21 days of fasting and prayer is to spend more time with God, so we encourage you to replace the time of the thing you are fasting with spiritual disciplines such as prayer, reading scripture, worship, serving, etc. We have excellent resources and guides that will help you in your prayer time at the bottom of this page. In addition, we will have the church building open for prayer on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30pm!

Reasons People Fasted In Scripture

1. To Seek God

Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. Acts 14:23

2. To Prepare For God's Work

Moses stayed there with the Lord forty days and forty nights, and during that time he did not eat food or drink water. And Moses wrote the words of the Agreement—the Ten Commandments—on the stone tablets. Exodus 34:28

3. To Receive Guidance From God

They were all worshiping the Lord and fasting for a certain time. During this time the Holy Spirit said to them, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul to do a special work for which I have chosen them." Acts 13:2

4. Emotional Healing

When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Nehemiah 1:4

5. Repentance

"Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning." Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. Joel 2:12-13

6. To Ask For Favor

There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. Ezra 8:21
